Sewage engineering

Protecting the environment is the responsibility of each and every householder and with sewage pollution a real risk, MJ Abbott are experts in the design, supply and installation of sewage systems for domestic, commercial and industrial applications.

Septic tanks & cesspools

Septic tanks are the traditional way of dealing with “off mains” drainage, and work effectively to collect the effluent discharged from a dwelling. A septic tank works by retaining the solids and allowing settlement, whilst the fluids move through the tank and flow out to an infiltration trench (soakaway). The construction of a suitably designed soakaway is critical to allow tertiary treatment of the fluids prior to being soaked into the ground.

Where a site is not suitable for a septic tank, a cesspool can be installed. This works like a septic tank, except there is no discharge of residual effluent. The cesspool is sealed and emptied by a licensed waste disposal company when required. Design is critical to avoid the costs of frequent desludging.

Sewage treatment plants

A sewage treatment plant works in a similar way to a septic tank but offers primary settlement of heavier solids, further settlement of finer solids and aeration of the fluids in a bio zone or reactor chamber. The aerobic process encourages bacterial growth which effectively cleans the fluids to a much higher standard than a septic tank. This improved final effluent quality permits discharge to rivers, streams and ditches.

With a huge range of sewage treatment plants available on the market, a simple “buy and fit” attitude is not always the best approach. MJ Abbott can advise and design a sewage treatment plant to suit a single dwelling, commercial development or large industrial premises. With over 20 years' experience, MJ Abbott offers sewage treatment plants from a number of manufacturers to suit your specific requirements and your budget.

Sewage pumping stations

For sites that require collection and pumping of sewage to mains locations, MJ Abbott are experts in the design and installation of sewage pumping stations for all applications. From domestic properties to schools and nursing homes, we have the experience to “get it right, first time”.

A sewage pumping station acts like a collection chamber and generally receives the waste by gravity. The chamber is fitted with either a single or dual pumps that handle the solids and transfer whole, or macerate the waste and pump the effluent.

Mains sewer connection

If your property or premises is located close to a utility company sewer main, MJ Abbott are able to assist with the necessary applications to form a new connection and carry out the full installation from manhole to sewer on your behalf, whether through the public highway or private ground.

Design and installation expertise

Whatever your sewage handling requirements, you should call MJ Abbott first. Our in-house design team will analyse your needs and propose the best solution to meet them, liaising with manufacturers where appropriate. We have an ongoing relationship with the Environment Agency, and are able to advise and assist with obtaining the necessary permits and licences.

We have vast experience of all types of ground conditions, whether high water table requiring dewatering by pumps or wellpoints, or unstable ground requiring trench sheets and hydraulic excavation support systems. Our installation teams have seen it all, and will install your system with the minimum of fuss and the highest standards of reinstatement on completion.

Sewage system servicing & maintenance

Once your system is installed, we offer full maintenance service contracts in accordance with manufacturers' recommendations to maximise the working life of your installation. If you are not satisfied with your current service provider, we are also happy to take on the maintenance of sewage systems installed by others.
