Installation of pitch floodlights

MJ Abbott successfully tendered for the installation of the pitch floodlighting for the training pitch following the successful construction of the main rugby pitch at the site.

The works were completed as follows:

  • A lighting control panel was designed and manufactured at our Dinton Works and then installed on site in an existing plant room. The control panel was then connected to the existing 3Ø site distribution board.
  • Excavations were made at the site of each of the four galvanised steel lighting columns around the pitch perimeter.
  • Each column base was surrounded in approximately 2m³ of ready-mix concrete and the excavated areas were reinstated.
  • Trenches were dug using a continuous wheel trencher from the control panel position to the base of each of the columns.
  • SWA (steel wired armoured) cables were then installed in the trenches along with warning marker tape and the excavations reinstated.
  • Underground cable joints were made adjacent to the base of each column to reduce the cable size to allow easy termination into an isolating switch mounted on the column.
  • A mobile access platform was used to provide safe working access to the top of each column.
  • Three 450W metal halide luminares were then installed on the top of each column together with a cable junction box and cabling installed down to the column isolator. The luminares were supported on custom galvanised steel brackets manufactured at our workshops.
  • On completion, the installation was tested in accordance with BS7671:2008 and a NICEIC Electrical Installation Certificate was issued.
