Construction of new winter games pitch

MJ Abbott Ltd successfully tendered for the construction of a new winter games pitch at King Edward VI Community College (KEVICC) in Totnes, Devon.

The works were designed and project managed by Steve Gingell of STRI Ltd from initial tender submission through to practical completion and grow-in maintenance on site.

The scope of works comprised:

  • Spraying off and removal of surface vegetation from site
  • Topsoil strip to working area
  • Cut & fill earthworks to form plateau on severely sloping ground
  • Topsoil re-spread to pitch surface and surrounds
  • Primary drainage installation at 3m centres
  • Importation and spreading of medium/fine sand to surface to improve topsoil quality
  • Cultivation and seeding of the pitch and working area on completion
  • Construction of tarmac path to link the new pitch with the existing school
  • Initial grow-in maintenance for the first 6 cuts together with top dressing, fertiliser application, aeration and overseeding.

The pitches are now heavily used by the College and provide a much needed additional winter games area which is extremely well drained and withstands a lot of use all year round.
