Hull City Tigers Football Club
Construction of new fibre sand training pitch
MJ Abbott secured the contract to construct a new fibre sand pitch for use by the first team of Hull City Tigers directly with the football club. The pitch construction work was specified and supervised by Tim Colclough of sports turf consultants TGMS Ltd.
The scope of works comprised:
- Removal of vegetation utilising Koro fraise mower
- Plateau cut and fill earthworks to establish designed levels
- Installation of primary drainage system
- Installation of fully automatic Rain Bird irrigation system complete with new storage tank, pump station and kiosk enclosure
- Installation of geotextile membrane
- Import and spread gravel carpet and lower sand layer
- Installation of pitch undersoil heating system complete with boiler plant
- Import and spread upper rootzone layer
- Import, spread and incorporate fibre sand to create 125mm depth of fibre reinforced rootzone (this aspect of the work was carried out by Premier Pitches)
- Final cultivation and seeding
- Installation of new boundary fence
- Removal of mounds and general landscaping.
The contract was carried out to a very tight time scale, with the work starting the day after the first team had completed training for their 2014 FA Cup Final against Arsenal.
MJ Abbott continues to provide technical support for the irrigation system.
