Construction of water feature at iconic 18th Hole

The 38th Ryder Cup was played out on the new Twenty Ten Course at the Celtic Manor Resort in South Wales. Designed by European Golf Design, the 18th Hole demanded an impressive landscape feature to add drama to the purpose designed course. MJ Abbott was commissioned to design and install a cascade and waterfall in front of the 18th Green.

The scope of work included:

  • Diversion of the existing mountain stream through bypass pipe work and construction of a coffer dam
  • Design and construction of 2 lakes and cast in-situ concrete dam faced with local stone to provide waterfall feature
  • Installation of mainline flow and return pipework and filter system to circulate water over the cascades
  • Supply, installation and connection of a new power supply from the Twenty Ten Clubhouse to feed the pumping and aeration systems
  • Design and installation of a low profile landscaped pump station to maintain the spectacular views from the Clubhouse and the 18th Hole as it is played.

The aesthetic simplicity of the water feature belies the engineering systems utilised in its construction.
