Installation of barrier pipe for mains water supply

MJ Abbott Limited were contacted by Coastal Homes Ltd to tender for the installation of 600m of 63mm MDPE barrier pipe after the ground conditions at Ashmore Farm were deemed as possibly contaminated.

To ensure that any potential contamination within the ground cannot leach through the pipework and into the drinking water supply, barrier pipe was specified as it is extruded with an aluminium outer layer which stops any ingress through the wall of the pipe. The pipe is further protected by a surrounding MDPE layer to protect the aluminium layer, which makes the pipe extremely rigid and difficult to handle.

MJ Abbott had the expertise to handle, electrofusion joint and lay the pipe in accordance with the manufacturer’s specification and to the satisfaction of Wessex Water to successfully complete this project.

The project scope of works comprised:

  • Installation of 600m of 63mm MDPE barrier pipe
  • Installation of 200m of 32mm MDPE barrier pipe
  • Installation of granular backfill
  • Installation of marker tape
  • Pressure testing and chlorination of the pipework on completion.

Once the pipework had been chlorinated to make it ready to carry drinking water, a chlorination certificate was provided to Wessex Water to allow connection to the public water supply network.
