Construction of new sports pitches at Littlehampton

MJ Abbott successfully tendered and commenced the sports pitch reconstruction project in August 2011.

The scope of work included the re-levelling of an existing undulating area to be used for football. The total area of work was 16,000m².

The following scope of works was carried out in accordance with the specification produced by Tim Lodge of Agrostis Turf Consultancy:

  • Vegetation stripped from topsoil by the use of a Koro Top Maker
  • Topsoil stripped clean and to full depth, subsoil cut and filled to required levels and the topsoil replaced to consolidated depth of 250mm
  • Installation of perimeter main and soakaway drainage
  • Installation of lateral drainage at 7.5 metres centres across the plateau, linking into mains drainage
  • Koro and drainage arisings utilised to create feature mounding
  • Construction of tarmac path linking existing public footpaths either side of the plateau
  • Application and amelioration of 670 tonnes of sand into the topsoil
  • Topsoil preparation and seeding
  • Initial maintenance of the pitch, including grass cutting, rolling and various fertiliser applications.
