Construction of new fibre-rootzone pitch surface

The scope of work included for the construction of a new fibre-rootzone pitch surface at The ESS Stadium, home of Aldershot Town Football Club of the Football Conference.

The project was slightly unusual as the fibre-rootzone material was provided free of charge by Chelsea Football Club, coming fresh from their stadium pitch renovation at Stamford Bridge. The works were carried out to the specification drawn up by Tim Colclough of sports turf consultants TGMS Ltd.

MJ Abbott carried out the following scope of works:

  • Removal of existing pitch surface utilising Koro fraise mower, and off site disposal
  • Surface rotavation and minor re-grading
  • Installation of gravel slits at 1000mm centres, ensuring connection with existing primary drainage
  • Installation of 150mm depth of fibre-rootzone (imported following pitch renovations at Stamford Bridge), graded to pitch contours
  • Cultivation and seeding (this part of the works was carried out by Premier Pitches).

The newly constructed pitch was then grown in by Aldershot Town's groundsman ready for the new Football Conference season.
