Royal Wimbledon Golf Club in Surrey has now completed eight years of renovation work, with contractor MJ Abbott executing a masterplan created by Mackenzie & Ebert.
The design firm developed its plan in the mid 2010s, and work began in 2016. Part of the plan was a substantial irrigation and drainage upgrade which is where MJ Abbott brought their expertise.
The extensive renovation project incorporated heathland restoration, drainage on an epic scale, bunker re-shaping and expansion of greens. The installation of vast amounts of drainage, along with the rest of the irrigation, greens construction and bunkering work, allowed MJ Abbott to be part of the journey.
Over the course of a number of phases over eight years, the skilled team at MJ Abbott completed fairway irrigation on every hole, re-built the greens on 15 and 18, built new tees on 15, 16 and 18, and constructed green extensions on holes 1 and 16. There was new fairway shaping and bunkers on holes 1, 3, 4, 12, 14, 15 and 16.
Royal Wimbledon Golf Club has a tremendous heritage and every effort was made to build to the best standards but in a way that was appropriate to this historic course.
