New short game area at Woburn opened by Manuel Piñero
Designed by former Ryder Cup player Manuel Piñero with his team at Target Golf and constructed by MJ Abbott, the Tavistock Short Game Area is a world class short game practice facility located in the pines and modelled on the Woburn courses.
The brief for the Tavistock Short Game Area was to create a short game facility located within the pines and modelled on the Woburn courses. The design was to consider a vast variance of shots up to 90 yards, to incorporate pitching, chipping and bunker play. Flexibility was required within the design to allow multiple users and to be able to create a beginners course with three or four short holes, which could also be used by children.
The design was carried out by former Ryder Cup player Manuel Piñero with his team at Target Golf, and the tender for the construction work was won by golf construction specialists MJ Abbott Limited.
Construction of the Tavistock Short Game Area was completed in just 60 days. Work commenced in July 2014, and green cultivation and seeding took place in August 2014. Grow-in was handled in-house by Woburn's course management team, and commenced in September 2014. The facility was opened by Manuel Piñero at a special ceremony on Monday 8th June 2015.
The Tavistock Short Game Area is located just a five minute walk from the Clubhouse at Woburn. The area is so versatile that it can be used by beginners to learn and more importantly enjoy playing a variety of shots in a golfing environment, offering a different dimension to range practice whilst still having the facilities needed for elite level practice. In addition, all-weather mats have been installed at several points to allow year round practice.
Initial feedback has been excellent, with current Ryder Cup player Ian Poulter making use of the facility during practice at Woburn in preparation for the US Open.
