MJ Abbott's project at London Irish Rugby Club's new Hazelwood training facility was for the construction of a new world class 17-pitch training complex on the site of a redundant pay and play golf course.

The scheme was let under a design and build contract, however the project was based on initial design work by STRI, the world's leading consultancy for design, research and management of natural and artificial sports surfaces. The client retained the services of STRI to monitor the construction process and post construction maintenance programme.

In his article for the STRI Bulletin Rob Everett, STRI's Principal Design Consultant, explains the design and construction process for the project in detail, describing the challenges faced by the project team along the way.
