Installing the gravel carpet on the 9th green

Founded in 1893 and situated just three miles from Bristol's city centre, Long Ashton is one of the area's premier golf clubs. Providing a true test of golf for players of all abilities, and complemented by a most welcoming clubhouse and some of the region's best practice facilities, Long Ashton is a fine place to enjoy playing golf at any time of the year. The course meanders along the back of a limestone ridge, and offers fine views across the city and the surrounding hills.

Long Ashton Golf Club has contracted golf construction specialists MJ Abbott to carry out an ambitious greens reconstruction project which will cement the Club's reputation as the highest quality golf course in the Bristol area.

The project will see the complete reconstruction of 14 greens, comprising:

  • removal of the existing turf and storing for re-laying;
  • excavating 400mm of the existing soil, clay and rock, and shaping to maintain the existing green contours;
  • installing a new herringbone drainage system;
  • laying a 100mm gravel carpet;
  • laying a 300mm layer of sand-rich rootzone;
  • re-laying the original turf;
  • renewing the irrigation around the greens where necessary; and
  • re-instating all disturbance to the course.

MJ Abbott was selected following a competitive tender process, having demonstrated that it was able to devote the necessary resources to the project to complete the contract within the Club's required tight timescale.

The project is due to be completed in early November.
