Ground breaking ceremony held at London Irish training facility

On Monday 21st October London Irish Rugby Club, together with their consultants Equals Consulting and contractors MJ Abbott and McAleer & Rushe, hosted a site visit and photo call for local dignitaries from the Spelthorne community at the Club's new elite training facility at Sunbury in West London, to mark the completion of the pitch construction and commencement of construction of the new clubhouse.

Attendees, including the Mayor-Elect, Tony Harman, and the Chief Executive of Spelthorne Borough Council, Roberto Tambini, were present to enjoy a site tour and speeches from John Conlan, Chairman of London Irish, and David Fitzgerald, Chairman of London Irish Amateurs.

Exiles Director of Rugby, Brian Smith, and players George Skivington and Declan Danaher, were also on site to inspect their future training base.

Significant progress has been made over the summer months and the project is now ahead of its original construction timetable and completion is expected in the summer of 2014 ready for the start of the 2014-15 season.

The pitch contractors, MJ Abbott Limited, are nearing completion of the ground works. The first team and 3G pitches are now complete and the formation and seeding of the remaining pitches has also been completed. Work will continue on the surrounding landscaping over the coming weeks.

Construction of the clubhouse is underway with the foundations currently being laid by clubhouse contractor McAleer & Rushe. The frame of the building will be erected in November.

London Irish Chairman, John Conlan, said: “The London Irish training centre will provide a state of the art facility for use by not only the Professional and Amateur Clubs of London Irish, but the whole of the local community.

“We are delighted to be nearing the fulfilment of our ambitious plans and believe that our new home provides a lasting legacy for our Clubs and all of those who will be using it.”

The new home of London Irish promises to be a very special environment for the Professional and Amateur clubs of London Irish, and for the whole of the Spelthorne community.
