Project summary

Reconstruction at Surrey's oldest heathland course

Following a competitive tendering process, MJ Abbott was awarded the contract to reconstruct the par three sixteenth hole at Woking Golf Club, the oldest of the heathland golf courses of Surrey and Berkshire. The redesign of the hole was carried out by Tim Lobb of renowned golf course architects Thomson Perrett & Lobb.

The scope of work included:

  • Construction of new 16th Green in woodland to the left of the original green, comprising final woodland clearance, topsoil strip, cut and fill earthworks, shaping of features, drainage, irrigation, topsoil re-spread, green construction, turfing of green surface and immediate surrounds, and seeding of fairway, approach and bunker surrounds
  • Construction of new 16th Tee situated to the right of the original tee
  • Extension of existing pond to the right of the new green
  • Construction of new path network to serve the new tee and green.

 

MJ Abbott Ltd were successful in tendering for the work at Woking Golf Club to construct our new 16th Hole. According to our historical documentation, very little has changed to the course in the past 119 years. Therefore it was of utmost importance that this radical but vital project was planned with precision and executed on time and on budget with the minimum of disruption to the membership – that’s where MJ Abbott came in! They competently delivered, completing the project to a high standard. Their work ethos was very much a ‘can do’ attitude throughout, and we look forward to working with MJ Abbott on other projects in the near future.
