MJ Abbott

Installation of SubAir system to the West Course

Wentworth Club, Surrey

Project summary

Installation of SubAir system to the iconic home course of the PGA

A SubAir system provides turf professionals with the ability to consistently deliver fresh air to the roots and subsoil, eliminate oxygen-poor conditions, stimulate plant growth and increase root growth to support healthy, constantly growing turf. The result: A premium playing surface that can bounce back quickly from excessive rainfall.

As part of the major reconstruction of the West Course at Wentworth Club in 2016, MJ Abbott installed a SubAir system to all 18 greens and the practice putting green.

To provide the necessary power to the SubAir vaults, MJ Abbott designed and installed a new three-phase power supply network to the West Course, comprising of connection to two existing Wentworth power supplies and six new connections to the mains network.

Compact trenching and cable laying equipment were used to navigate around sensitive areas of the golf course, with minimal disruption to the estate. Directional drilling equipment was used where required to install cables beneath estate roads.

SubAir vaults were installed to each green, connected into new and existing drainage pipework with the necessary dual valves and water separators to ensure the system operates efficiently.
