Construction of SISGrass stitched hybrid turf stadium pitch

Sutton United Football Club, VBS Community Stadium

Introduction

New stitched hybrid stadium pitch for National League challengers

VBS Community Stadium is the home of Sutton United Football Club, who compete in the Vanarama National League, and Crystal Palace FC Women, who compete in the Women’s Super League.

The original failing pitch needed replacing to sustain the quantity of scheduled play.

The club’s consultant was Charles Henderson of OBi Sports, who provided the pitch design and monitored construction through to grow in and final sign off.

Construction started at the end of May 2024.

Project challenges

A tight and busy stadium site

This tight and busy stadium site is located within a residential area surrounded by dwellings.

With the project requiring a total of 350 lorry movements, managing deliveries and providing safe access was a daily task for our site management team.

The whole construction process had to be completed with utmost respect to the club’s neighbours, whilst maintaining an efficient works programme.

Our approach

Exceptional project management to overcome the challenges

The scope of work included:

• Removal of the existing carpet-based pitch surface.
• Installation of new gravel slits, connecting to the existing underlying drainage system.
• Installation of new undersoil heating system.
• Repair existing irrigation system and install a new controller.
• Import and spread 200mm depth of lower sand and 100mm depth of upper rootzone.
• Installation of SISGrass stitched hybrid pitch reinforcement system.
• Installation of synthetic carpet to immediate pitch perimeter.

Outcomes

Successful execution to a tight programme

On completion, the pitch was grown in successfully and is maintained by Sutton FC grounds team, Sportsturf Maintenance Ltd.
