MJ Abbott

Primary drainage to outfield at The County Ground

Somerset County Cricket Club, Taunton

Project summary

Outfield drainage at the historic home of cricket in Somerset

MJ Abbott successfully tendered for the contract to install primary land drainage within the entire outfield at the County Ground.

The project comprised the following scope of works carried out in accordance with the specification produced by Iain James of TGMS:

  • Deep scarification of the outfield utilising Koro Field Top Maker
  • Minor re-grading of the outfield
  • Installation of drainage pumping chamber complete with piped outlet to Stockwell Stream and extension of electric supply from the grandstand
  • Installation of drainage scheme comprising 1,800 linear metres of mainlines and 1,650 linear metres of lateral pipework, spaced at 3 metre centres across the outfield
  • Application of sand topdressing, fertiliser and seed
  • Removal of all excavated spoil off site to tip.

The success of the drainage contract contributed to Somerset’s 2nd place finish in the 2016 County Championship and the award of the NatWest T20 International between England and South Africa in June 2017.

With a short lead time from tender to the start date of the drainage work, MJ Abbott never dropped the ball. Their on site team worked extremely smoothly from dawn to dusk to give us a quick yet efficient and tidy job with a quality installation. I look forward to working with MJ Abbott on any future works undertaken here at Somerset CCC without hesitation.
