Introduction

New pitch surrounds required to reflect latest sponsor branding

The club wanted to re-surface their existing 3G pitch surrounds at the American Express Stadium.

Through discussions with the club, MJ Abbott was selected to carry out the project.

Project challenges

Hidden infrastructure

Following removal of the old surface and shockpad, our site team had to deal with the challenge of unforeseen stadium surfaces and infrastructures.

We found a variety of surface finishes, poor surface levels, forgotten and un-used metal fixings for pitch frost protection and a variety of previously hidden chambers to negotiate.

Our approach

Customised installation to fit with club branding

The scope of work included:

  • Removal of existing 3G surface and existing shockpad.
  • Carry out repairs to the existing surface where required.
  • Installation of new in-situ rubber shockpad.
  • Installation of new Desso 3G surface and infill.

The surface selected by the club, after detailed discussions, was a 1m wide strip of green coloured 3G surface down each wing, with the remainder in bespoke “Brighton & Hove Albion blue”.

The surrounds feature two bespoke stadium sponsor signs, each measuring 20 linear metres, stitched into the surface.

The project was completed ahead of time to the satisfaction of the client, ready for the kick off of the Premier League season in August 2023.
