Project challenges
Tricky ground conditions
The pitch is constructed over ground which comprises gravel, sand and a high water table.
Particular consideration and attention was made towards pitch sub base stability and the design of floodlight foundations.
Our approach
Detailed project planning and expert site management
The scope of work included:
- Removal of up to 1 metre of topsoil
- Cut and fill earthworks
- Installation of a primary drainage system complete with ducting
- Installation of concrete perimeter kerbs and floodlight foundations
- Import and spread 300mm depth of primary sub-base
- Lay 40mm depth of tarmac and Desso 3G synthetic turf system comprising cast in situ rubber shockpad and carpet
- Installation of floodlights and super re-bound fencing
- Installation of new mains electric cable complete with connections to incoming site supply and new electric kiosks
- Construction of temporary building infrastructure comprising: reduced dig, stoned sub bases and access routes, concrete foundations; sewerage, water and electric services; renovation of existing treatment plant and new sewage transfer pumping plant.
Outcomes
FIFA certification
The pitch was installed within the required timescales and tested prior to first use, receiving very high praise from the test house, and obtained FIFA certification with ease.
The pitch was opened to the club’s Academy for first use in mid-November 2022.
Watching the site transform on a week-by-week basis was both exciting and impressive. We knew we were in safe hands in choosing MJ Abbott, their depth of resource and knowledge to deliver this project, reinforced our contractor decision. The pitch has received lots of praise from the club’s coaches and has become a very important addition to our academy set up.
