Primary and secondary land drainage schemes

The pressure on groundsmen and golf course managers to produce optimum playing conditions throughout the year is increasing and good drainage is at the heart of all fine turf surfaces.

Land drainage schemes can be broken down into two main categories: primary piped systems and secondary operations.

Primary piped systems form the infrastructure for any subsequent secondary schemes by removing ground water through a network of pipes to an outfall.

Secondary land drainage schemes intercept surface water, conveying it to the lateral drains in the primary system.
